Suzanne Phoenix has been self-publishing photobooks and zines for almost a decade and has participated in all Melbourne Art Book Fairs since its inception in 2015 as one of the founding members of Melbourne Photobook Collective. Since 2020, and the lockdown environment, Suzanne has self-published a number of collaborative photobooks documenting several communities. These include two publications of the ‘Isolation Portraits’ series with over 60 households and 100 people in her local community in Upper Yarra Valley on the edge of Metro Melbourne. The ‘Artists in Residence’ series self-published in October 2020 features collaborative artworks from 52 Victorian artists during lockdown. Portraits from both these series were shortlisted as finalists in the 2021 National Photographic Portrait Prize. ‘IWD 2012-2021’ was released in March 2021, a series of portraits of women, trans and non-binary people created over 10 years where they responded to the question ‘what does International Women’s Day mean to me?’. ‘Unprecedented’ was released in 2020 featuring diptychs of photographs created close to home in lockdown and coupled with quotes from politicians during that time.
