TERRAIN, opened December 2023, is Australia’s first specialty bookshop, gallery and transdisciplinary studio dedicated to ecological and more-than-human oriented literature, art, design, and technology.
This new independent space offers the community a place for critical dialogues and exchange that highlight the interconnectedness between humans and the non-human world, and offer a set of blueprints for how we might design our way forward as one planetary ecosystem.
TERRAIN’s interiors are symbolically inspired by caves and subterranean landforms, as our earliest places of shelter, dwelling and retreat. To embody an ecological ethic, the materials selected implement experimental and playful innovations in circularity, material efficiency, decarbonisation and bioremediation. With this approach to design, TERRAIN brings to life a contemplative community space that sparks joy, awe and wonder for the living world, whilst minimising harm and making complex socio-ecological topics and emerging concepts accessible to the wider public.
Featured design elements include: mycelium lights, lime walls, algae-based bioplastic panel blinds, recycled plastic and aluminium furnishings, phytoremediation tank, a self-hosted renewably powered website server, and interactive sound design.
