Ornate Gesture is the small-press imprint of Naarm/Melbourne based designer Edward Hubber. The imprint focuses on the production of high quality zines and small-run art books that explore visual culture and thinking-through-making. Past projects have centred around collage, photography of object collections and paper weaving, to name a few. The imprint gets its name from Susan Sontag’s ‘Notes on Camp’ and revels in the gaudy, marginalised and excessive. It centres work around high and low brow visual culture, exploring design philosophy through a clash of cut-up visuals. It embrace the camp-ish methodologies of critical design – burlesque, violence, exaggeration – and uses them to tell stories and engage with ideas.
