Considered Environment: In Discussion Past Event

Centre for Contemporary Photography, alongside Naarm/Melbourne based photographer and acb press publisher Rohan Hutchinson, are excited to present a discussion around historical and contemporary photobook design – posing the question ‘what do photobooks mean in a digital future?’

Featuring project lead and artist/publisher Rohan Hutchinson, photobook creator and photographer Yanni Florence, photographer Katrin Koenning, and DesignOffice Creative Director Mark Simpson.

Considered Environment: In Discussion is presented as part of the larger exhibition project Considered Environment: The Photobooks of Yukio Tabuchi and Camera Mainichi on display in CCP’s Gallery 4

Rohan Hutchinson Speaker

Rohan Hutchinson is a photographic artist and designer whose work researches the transformation of space and our relationship with the environment, both built and the natural. Hutchinson’s work is an expanded practice, exploring the photographic image within gallery and publication settings, with the inclusion of event design.

In 2020 Hutchinson founded acb press, an independent publishing platform set up to educate and create conversations around photo book publishing and design. Artbook fairs Hutchinson has participated in include, New York, Photo Paris LA, Tokyo, Shanghai, Beijing, UAE, Vienna, Sydney and Melbourne.

Collections include V&A Museum National Art Library (London), New York Public Library, Printed Matter Inc (New York), Sharjah Art Foundation, National Art Gallery of Canada Library, National Library of Australia, NGV Shaw Research Library, Victorian State Library, Gippsland Art Gallery

Mark Simpson Speaker

Mark Simpson is the Joint Creative Director of DesignOffice, an architecture and interior design practice located in Collingwood, Melbourne The studio was established in 2008, creating innovative spaces for the hospitality, retail, residential, commercial and institutional sectors. Mark is also a Director of Platform; a sister company of DesignOffice. Platform specialises in working with brands across a range of commercial sectors to collaboratively create impactful, user-centric environments for application across multiple sites.

Yanni Florence Speaker

Yanni Florence (b. 1965, Melbourne, Australia) is a photographer and book designer. He co-founded, edited and designed the seminal art publication Pataphysics Magazine (1989). His work has been included in several group exhibitions, including Melbourne Now in 2013. His first solo exhibition, Tram Windows, was held at ReadingRoom in 2019. There are eight published books of his photographs: Self Conscious (2009), Southland (2014), Animal Life (2014), Street Porn (2014), Immolation (2015), HE IS IN THE CITY (2017), Tram Windows (2019), Trees and Fences (zine box set) 2021. Works from the series Tram Windows were included in the NGV Triennial, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne (2020–21).
