Sick Leave is an independent publisher founded in 2018 by Harry Reid, Gareth Morgan and Ursula Robinson-Shaw. Sick Leave works at what could be described as a human pace: one book every now and then. This ‘slow publishing’ model has many benefits: through multiple editorial rounds, authors have support to think deeply about their work; editors manage burnout and have time to devote to other projects; readers aren’t overwhelmed by content, and the work they read is illuminated by a brighter spotlight. This model allows for the capture of more esoteric, complex, marginal pieces of writing that wouldn’t normally make it past the ‘slush pile’. Join Sick Leave co-directors Ursula Robinson-Shaw and Gareth Morgan, and designer Zoe Hannay, for a reflection on DIY literary publishing in a perilous marketplace.
