Books are often treated as fixed objects, but they function more usefully as structures for exchange. To publish is to enter a process that extends beyond the single volume, where each book operates as a binding point within a wider field of communication and contributes to a larger cultural discourse.
Shaping Books, Finding Friends looks at how designing and producing books becomes a way of building connections between authors, artists, designers, makers and readers. Venice-based graphic design studio, publisher and bookstore bruno will speak about a design and publishing practice centred on the book, and how this focus has gradually opened up a wider network of collaborations.
Supported by Monash University Art Design & Architecture and Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Melbourne.
Participants
Andrea Codolo and Giacomo Covacich
Andrea Codolo and Giacomo Covacich are graphic designers and publishers working under the pseudonym bruno since 2013. The project, which is based in Venice, combines a graphic design studio, an exhibition space and a specialist bookstore focussing on visual communication and international independent publishers. As for communication design, the studio deals in particular with visual identities, setting up exhibitions, publishing projects, information design and data visualisation in collaboration with institutions, cultural foundations and private clients. Since 2014 bruno has also become a publishing brand.
Warren Taylor
Warren Taylor is a lecturer in Communication Design at Monash University and founder of The Narrows – a curatorial project interested in the convergence of art and design. As a graphic designer, he has produced a wide range of publications and printed matter for artists and galleries, and has contributed to several archival projects, including Re:collection, an archive of Australian graphic design. Beyond his curatorial and design practice, Taylor has maintained an active role in international design education and exchange and has been closely involved in Monash’s Prato program in Italy, during which he first met Andrea and Giacomo.
