American artist Sam Contis has published three acclaimed monographs: Deep Springs (Mack, 2017), Day Sleeper (Mack, 2020), and Overpass (Aperture, 2022). At Melbourne Art Book Fair she will be in conversation with MUMA Senior Curator Pip Wallis to discuss her publishing practice, her PHOTO 2021 public art installation commissioned in Melbourne, and her current survey exhibition at the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth.

Sam Contis
Sam Contis is a visual artist working with photography and moving image, whose interests center around the figure and the landscape and their interconnectedness. She has published three acclaimed monographs: Deep Springs (Mack, 2017), Day Sleeper (Mack, 2020), and Overpass (Aperture, 2022). She is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artists Award. Her work is represented in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; the Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; among others. She was commissioned by PHOTO Australia to make a public art installation for PHOTO 2021 International Festival of Photography, Melbourne, and her survey exhibition Sam Contis: Moving Landscape, curated by Anna Arabindan-Kesson, is currently on display at the Art Gallery of Western Australia. She is a Senior Critic in Photography at the Yale School of Art and lives and works in New York Cit
Pip Wallis
Pip Wallis is Senior Curator at MUMA. Before joining MUMA Pip was Director of Programs at Callie's Berlin where she worked on programs by Bouchra Khalili, Sophie Lee, and Colin Self. She was previously Curator, Contemporary Art, National Gallery of Victoria Melbourne where she curated projects by Simone Forti, Hito Steyerl, and Adam Linder and commissioned works by Nicholas Mangan and Ruth Höflich. Prior, she held curatorial positions at Chisenhale Gallery London and Gertrude Contemporary, and was managing editor at X-TRA Contemporary Art Quarterly, Los Angeles. She was a lead researcher on Precarious Movements: Choreography and the Museum and a member of Matter In Flux.
PHOTO Australia
