Best known for shaping some of Australia’s most recognisable visual campaigns – including Life. Be in It. and Slip! Slop! Slap! – Alexander Stitt AM (1937–2016) was also a prolific painter whose studio practice remained largely unseen. This exhibition presents works drawn from his private archive: paintings created not for clients or campaigns, but for himself. Freed from briefs, the works reveal a different tempo – playful, experimental, reflective and deeply human.

Inducted into the Australian Graphic Design Association Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Design Institute of Australia Hall of Fame in 2011, Stitt was recognised as one of the country’s most significant creative figures. In 2016 he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to the graphic arts profession, to the animated film and television industry, and to the community through public health programs.

The exhibition will be open daily from 17 May – 28 June 2026

Be In It.: The Artworks of Alexander Stitt AM, Ryan curates Stitt’s personal painted archive, shaping the narrative framework and exhibition design and presenting a rarely seen body of work.
